ABOUT THE SCHOOL
Where is the school located?
The School of Artisan Food is located on the Welbeck Estate in North Nottinghamshire, off the A60. Click here to visit our ‘Find Us’ pages for more information on how to find the school
Is the School of Artisan Food just another cookery school?
No! The School of Artisan Food is more than a cookery school. We do of course teach you how to produce delicious and nutritious food such as bread, cheese, beer and much more. The difference at The School of Artisan Food is that we also think about food – how it is made, why we do things the way do, and what are the alternatives.
Unlike many other cookery schools, the School of Artisan Food offers a full time degree course, which will be accredited by one of the regional universities. This will be the first course of its kind in the UK.
To see the full range of subjects and ideas that the school teachers, check out our degree programme.
What sort of organisation is the school?
The School of Artisan Food is a company Limited by Guarantee, and is a not-for-profit organisation. Any surplus that the school makes will be used to develop and expend the school and the range of courses we offer, and also to set up a student bursary fund.
OUR COURSES
What courses do you offer?
The School of Artisan Food offers a number of different courses to suit everyone. At the introductory level, we offer demonstrations and tasting evenings for people to come along and sample different food and drink. As well as this we offer introductory one day courses in a number of subjects, such as bread making, brewing, butchery, charcuterie and cheese making.
We also offer professional courses for people who may be interested in food as a career. Our advanced courses run from an intensive 1 week programme to the flagship of our training, our full time degree course(s).
For more information on all of our courses, please visit ‘Our Courses’.
I have no prior experience in food, does this matter?
No! Anyone and everyone is welcome at The School of Artisan Food regardless of your prior experience and/or knowledge.
Check out the courses we have on offer. If you are in doubt, visit the ‘Contact Us’ page and fill in the form and we will get back to you with some recommendations.
What are your fees and what else do I need to pay?
For our short courses, the fee for each course is shown on the course details page. This is the fee payable by you. These fees do vary slightly from course to course.
If you take a short course then there are no charges to pay the school, other than the course fee shown on the course details page(s). However, you should bear in mind that other costs could be:

- Accommodation if you require an overnight stay in the local area
For those interested in our full time degree course, details of this, which include the accrediting university and the fees, are currently being confirmed.

OUR DEGREE COURSE
I am interested in the degree course – When does it start?
The first degree programme will commence in September 2010. We anticipate accepting our first applications for this course from September 2009.
How do I apply for the Degree?
The School of Artisan Food is currently working with a regional university to develop the degree programme. This work is going well and we will be announcing more details about the degree programme over the Summer.
We currently anticipate applications for the degree being open from September 2009, and you will be able to apply in 1 of 2 ways:
- Through UCAS (if you are applying for more than 1 institution – i.e. you are a school leaver, then you should apply through UCAS)
- Direct to the school – you can apply directly to the school if The School of Artisan Food is the ONLY course you are applying for.
Do I have to pay to apply?
No, we do not charge an application fee at the school. You may be requested however to attend a selection day. In this case, you will be liable for any expenses you incur on this day, as SAF can not reimburse applicants for attending a selection day.
What are the entrance requirements for the degree
We are looking for highly motivated students to join our degree programme. The degree is a balance of practical and vocational training around food production, and academic research and theory. We will be publishing our formal entrance requirements later in the summer, however we are interested in the individual and not just academic requirements. Entrance will be based partly around academic achievement but our main source of selection will be through a selection day and interview.
Sign up and pre-register your interest in the degree and we will keep you informed as the degree programme develops.
What are the fees for this course
The fees for the degree course are currently being finalised, along with the accrediting university. When these details are available, they will be published on the website.
